Your First Session

Going to therapy can be intimidating, especially if it’s the first time you’re going.

First off, know that you’ll feel comfortable soon enough and that you don’t need to share everything about yourself right away. We both need a chance to get to know each other, which is recommended to build a good foundation with each other. Know I won’t pressure you. I work with what you are comfortable with.

Here’s what your first session may look like:

  • Pop online or enter my office
  • Have some space for getting to know each other without any pressure to get deep
  • Allow you to ask whatever you would like to ask me or get to know before we get more into the session
  • Review or fill out your intake form. This helps me get to know your background a bit and gives me some context for whatever brought you into therapy
  • Gather your consent for doing therapy together and inform you of my policies
  • Ease into what is weighing on you or that you would like to unpack
  • Set general goals together for what you are looking for in therapy and how we may meet them (this can take a few sessions as we learn more about you and what you are going through)
  • Arrange the next session where we will review your goals set and adjust if needed

Further sessions with you will be guided by what you prefer based on what you would like to discuss in the session, your personality and preferences, and what you’ve found helpful (or unhelpful) in the past if you’ve attended therapy before, and so on.

  • For example, if you want to play cards while you talk about something personal, I’ve got some. If you want the lights dimmed because you are sensitive to stimuli, I’ve got you covered. If you want to act out a conversation you need to have with a loved one, we can do that. Just let me know!

Know it will all be open for adjustments as we go. Nothing is set in stone!
